Gaze Control as an Input Device

Human gaze has hidden potential for the interaction between the user and the computer. Eye-tracking techniques have been utilized in psychological research, for testing empirically human perceptual or cognitive processes. Likewise, eye-tracking is well fitted for the use of testing software usability, or for example the effectiveness of marketing materials, because those tests are typically set up in laboratory environments. The suitability of eye-tracking for controlling computer in everyday applications has been limited, due to the high price and the awkwardness of the equipment needed. However, nowadays there are quite delicate devices for getting the gaze data requiring the user not to “wear” any special equipment. Moreover, the example of the cost reduction in computer industry shows us how dramatically the expansion of markets affects the expenses of manufacturing. This article summerizes the possibilities and difficulties of using the gaze as an input device. It then describes what kind of experimental applications have been constructed so far. At the end is shortly described Jacob Nielsens suggestion for the next generation interfaces, so called non-command interfaces and stated that of gaze control would be a very useful input method in such interfaces.
